Hi, I’m Ben, programmer at FifthWisdom!

FW-Ben

You’ve read more about Clara and Tammy in the past few weeks. Today we get to know more about Ben who is a programmer at FifthWisdom and passionate about cycling! Can you go faster then him?

Who are you and what do you do at FifthWisdom?
Hi my name is Ben and I’m a programmer. I chose being a programmer probably because it combines the fact that I loved playing legos when I was a kid, and to me, programming is like creating a product. It’s like assembling pieces of lego altogether in order to form a new object. I spend lots of time playing computer games, and I think working in a field you’re passionate about is a privilege.

I studied Computer Sciences at IVE, and I’ve always wanted to build games. And being a programmer is a good job, there’s more and more demand and interesting work to do as we are going into a more digitalised world!

What makes working at FifthWisdom so special?
I started to work at FifthWisdom 5 months ago, so I’m pretty new here. I’m a big fan of building educational games that matter for students and teachers in order to create a better environment for learning while playing our games. There’s a great atmosphere in the office and the working place is comfortable.

How was your first day at work?
That’s a funny one. I remember showing up very early at around 9:00am in the morning but actually no one was in the office yet because we usually start at 10:00am. I had to wait in the lobby and the security guards almost thought I was a thief. That would have been quite unusual for a thief to show up at 9:00am but who knows right? The day went fine, I remember chatting a lot with my new colleagues in order to know more about them and I’ve felt comfortable right away! It was great!

What’s your favourite game developed by FifthWisdom?
My favourite game is Old Master Q, the same as Tammy, our artist at FifthWisdom. I’m interested in the comic, it’s a very famous one from Hong Kong, so it’s always good to be involved in such a project. And it’s funny too, such as the character Big Potato that I personally love!

What’s your favourite game?
If I were to keep one single video game ever, that would be Pokemon on Nintendo 3DS. I just love the environment, the atmosphere, the quests. The game content is very rich, I like there are many pokemons and the different adventures we can follow. Pikachu is my favourite pokemon. By far my favourite.

How do you see the Future of Education?
I believe Education will tend to digitalise more and more because we’re always looking for improving processes and being more efficient. Children have huge stress and tension because of the race to excellence, especially in Hong Kong. There are long learning hours, and educational games can make it more interesting and less boring.
I think there will be less and less teachers as we see them in the classroom and students will be able to learn thanks to cameras and computers. There will be more active interaction and more “a-la-carte” learning.

During these famous Friday gathering in the office, what’s your favourite tea
I love lemon tea and I usually enjoy healthy salads and chicken legs. Not the feet right but the legs!
